College English: Upper Classmen
Mrs. Geiman (Room 123)
Syllabus

Course Description:

The title of this course is College English 11 and 12. Throughout the 2009-2010 school year, you will acquire the following skills through our collective efforts:
  • Increase your reading speed and perform one/two grade levels higher in reading comprehension
  • Know the eight parts of speech in English
  • Learn various strategies and apply them to become a better reader
  • Be able to write a standard academic essay
  • Increase your academic vocabulary by 300 words

Grading:

Each term, your grade will be determined by:
  • Tests, Quizzes and Projects 25%
  • Homework 20%
  • Classwork 20%
  • Participation, Attendance and Attitude 20%
  • Midterm and Final Exam 15%

Tests, Quizzes and Projects:

Tests, Quizzes and Projects are based on what we have covered throughout the unit. I create tests from classwork, homework, notes and class discussions. The tests are multiple choice, short answer, matching, and essay format. I will provide you with a test review sheet and you will always know exactly what you need to study.

Binder:

Your binder is just as important as your tests. It will be checked throughout the semester and graded. You are required to keep your binder in my classroom. If you take it home for homework or to study for exams, you MUST bring it back the following day.

Homework:

Homework will be given at least 2-3 times per week, and may include assignments on weekends. Homework that is complete and handed in on time, will receive full credit. Late homework will receive points off for each day it is turned in after the due date. If a homework assignment is returned with no credit, you may have the opportunity to resubmit for full credit.

Classwork:

In addition to notes and assignments, classwork includes participation, preparation, and behavior. If you come to class focused and ready to learn (with your materials), you will do well in my class! You will be required to do individual or group classwork that will be handed in or checked at the end of class for credit, unless I say otherwise.

Absences:

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up what you missed. In addition to asking me for help, use your classmates as great resources as well. Make-up work should be handed in no later than the end of the week that you were absent. If you miss more then 3 classes per semester, you will be in danger of failing.

Participation:

It is very important that you ask questions and participate in class discussions. These discussions will occur as an entire class or in small groups. The class will be as interesting as YOU make it!

Materials:
  • 1 ½ or 2 inch binder
